Can a shu puerh actually be tasty?
This is a question asked by many orthodox sheng puerh drinkers — myself included.
For a long time, shu puerh was simply not what I was looking for in tea. But I have come to realise that it absolutely can be delicious. And when you add some age — say 20 years or more — it can become something truly special.
The problem is, of course, that very few of us have the time and patience to wait twenty years.
So why not start with something that is already very good?
Veian Organic Gushu Shu Puerh — Batch 7
I am just beginning to brew the improved recipe of Batch 7 from the Veian Organic Gushu Tea Garden. This batch was made during Christmas 2025 and was later pressed into bings.
I have only three cakes available now, and this is a rare opportunity to share them with you.
What makes this shu particularly interesting is the raw material. It is made from gushu leaves from the ancient tea trees of the Veian tea gardens.
If you have tried one of the Veian danzhu teas — such as the tea from the 750-year-old tea tree — or the Pang San Zhou maocha made from the five oldest tea trees, then you already know the quality of the material.
The same level of tea leaves was used here as the raw material for fermentation into shu puerh.
That makes this something quite different from ordinary shu.
Tasting Notes
I begin with a very short cleansing brew, and already the first impression is one of remarkable cleanliness and purity.
The second, proper infusion gives me an unexpected impression: a beautifully brewed, high-quality coffee.
This might sound almost offensive when talking about tea, but the comparison is surprisingly accurate. There is the same sense of purity, balance and clarity that you find in a really good coffee — particularly in a single-origin estate coffee prepared with a V60.
At the same time, there is a genuine shu puerh character quietly present in the background.
The result is a delicious drink that could perhaps act as a bridge between people who love speciality coffee and those who love tea.
The third and fourth infusions become even more enjoyable.
The main characteristic of this batch — and of this pressing in particular — is purity. And that purity leads directly to drinkability: you finish one cup and immediately want another.
And then another.
I could probably continue with detailed tasting notes, but I would rather end with my strongest impression of this tea:
This shu puerh is not even really “shu” anymore. It is something more.
Enjoy it — and I am quite sure there will be more of it in the future as I reserved 10 kg of this already .
Shu, Pressing and Transformation
There is another interesting aspect to this tea.
Shu puerh is already a post-fermented tea before it is pressed. But once the fermented leaves are pressed into a cake, the process does not simply stop. During pressing and subsequent storage, the cake takes on another degree of humidity and continues to transform.
You can experience this difference quite clearly by comparing the bingcha with the loose version of this same tea and even more the Lao Cha Tou from this batch is available.
The loose version allows you to taste the fermented material in a different stage of its development, while the pressed cake begins another chapter of transformation.
Both are interesting, but they are not quite the same tea experience.
From the previous batch, the bingcha is still available. The loose version has already sold out, but there is also Lao Cha Tou available from both versions.
And Lao Cha Tou is another universe of shu puerh altogether.
These small nuggets formed naturally during the fermentation process develop a remarkably different character from ordinary shu — dense, sweet, rich and often surprisingly complex.
If you enjoy shu puerh, it is well worth exploring alongside the cakes.
Only three cakes of the new Batch 7 pressing are available now.

Veian Organic Gushu Shu Puerh — Batch 7
A to z neho robí niečo celkom iné než obyčajný shu.
Je tu rovnaký pocit čistoty, vyváženosti a jasnosti, aký nájdete v skutočne dobrej káve — najmä v single-origin káve z jednej farmy pripravenej metódou V60.
Zároveň je v pozadí stále jemne prítomný autentický charakter shu puerhu.
Výsledkom je lahodný nápoj, ktorý by možno mohol byť mostom medzi ľuďmi, ktorí milujú výberovú kávu, a tými, ktorí milujú čaj.
Tretí a štvrtý nálev sú ešte chutnejšie.
Hlavnou vlastnosťou tejto várky — a tohto konkrétneho lisovania — je čistota. A práve táto čistota vedie k jeho výbornej piteľnosti: dopijete jednu šálku a okamžite chcete ďalšiu.
A potom ešte jednu.
Užite si ho — a som si istý, že v budúcnosti ho bude viac, pretože z tejto várky som si už rezervoval 10 kg.
Shu, lisovanie a transformácia
Tento rozdiel môžete veľmi dobre pocítiť, keď porovnáte bingcha so verziou voľného listu toho istého čaju.
